PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP has called on Beijing to end its unfair trade policies and the use of subsidies to keep prices artificially high, warning that China has been trying to impose unfair trade restrictions since at least 2012.
In a tweet on Monday, Trump, who has been on a trade mission to Asia, warned that China had tried to “bully” the U.S. for years.
“It is very unfair to the United States, which has lost billions of dollars, and is losing hundreds of thousands of jobs, and has been forced to use subsidies to pay for the production of its toxic products,” Trump wrote.
“It is unfair to our workers and to the American people that we are forced to subsidize China’s economic policies and its unfair policies against our workers.”
Trump’s criticism of China comes amid heightened concerns about the U,S.’ trade relationship with Beijing following the election of President Xi Jinping in late 2012.
Trump, who is known for his aggressive rhetoric, has previously called for China to be punished for alleged “economic warfare” against the U., and he has accused Beijing of manipulating currency markets and using subsidies to make U.s. exports cheaper.
