Posted April 30, 2020 13:00:38The world’s largest greenhouse in Australia is finally getting ready to be built.
The ERCO Greenhouse Facility is set to become Australia’s first state-of-the-art greenhouse.
It’s designed to provide Australia with its fair share of heat, cool and clean energy.
But the facility’s construction is also about creating jobs, according to the project’s director.
It will provide the state of New South Wales with its electricity, heat, and cooling needs.
But it will also bring significant benefits to the local economy.
“We want to build a facility that provides the state and the region with the opportunity to create thousands of jobs, but also a significant amount of energy savings,” says ERCOs director, Rob Pugh.
“So it’s a bit like a big windfall, and it’s the right thing to do for both the environment and the economy.”
Construction is set for completion by the end of 2019, with the greenhouse being completed in 2021.
The state of Queensland has already invested $1 billion in the construction of the facility.
It’ll produce 1,000 megawatts of electricity, with more than 30,000 jobs to be created.
The ERCo Greenhouse is one of the most ambitious climate change projects in the world.
Its design was developed by scientists from the University of Queensland and other Australian universities, including the ANU, and developed by the Queensland Government’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
The project’s primary aim is to create jobs and provide energy to the state.
“It’s about creating thousands of new jobs and we’ve got a great opportunity here to do that,” says Pugh, who has worked on the project for the past 15 years.
“The project is going to provide us with energy that’s clean, that’s safe and secure, and that will be in the local area.”
But the biggest jobs will come from the construction itself, which will bring $2.2 billion to the region.
“Construction is really about getting this project built,” says Mr Pugh of the state’s contribution.
“There’s going to be thousands of people that will start to be employed and they will bring in jobs for a lot of local businesses, for a variety of businesses, but that’s really the major driver of the project.”
Construction of the ERCos Greenhouse will begin in 2021, and the facility will produce 2,500 megawatts (MW) of electricity each year.
But for now, the project is not expected to have a carbon footprint.
The Queensland Government is also committed to creating 500 jobs during construction.
